All proceeds support our Project for Medically Needy Children and kids like Madeline, who was born at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) with short gut syndrome, a life-threatening condition in which a newborn’s intestines never function adequately. Her young mother could rarely be found. Child Advocates Fellow Pamela Ende was appointed as Madeline’s attorney. Due to her inability to care for Madeline, the mother’s parental rights were eventually terminated.
Child Advocates faced two enormous challenges: securing Madeline the best medical care available and finding her an adoptive, loving family. Child Advocates worked closely with CHOP and the Court to ensure that Madeline had the best chance for survival. While waiting for a rare intestinal transplant, two-year-old Madeline’s condition deteriorated and she began to bleed internally. CHOP identified a small clinical trial of an experimental drug manufactured in Germany and they applied to enroll Madeline. The clock was ticking, as the drug company closed for two weeks for the Christmas holiday. Through Pamela’s tireless advocacy, the medicine arrived in time!
The experimental drug stabilized Madeline’s condition and she remains a transplant candidate. After contacting numerous agencies, Child Advocates and partner organizations found a wonderful family who quickly fell in love with Madeline. Adoption was finalized in record time, and Madeline is now the youngest of four children in a loving home. With your support, Madeline’s future is filled with promise.
